RRCC begins new program

RRCC Staff Report

With more and more demand for energy efficiency throughout the region and nation, the need for green and sustainable builders is expected to increase.
In response, Rainy River Community College has developed a new program, Green and Sustainable Construction Technology. The program is designed to prepare students to become all-around building trades professionals in areas such as framing, interior finishing, siding, shingling, drywall installation, masonry, acoustical ceiling installation, maintenance carpentry, and prefabrication production.


Voyageurs trounce UW-Stout

The Rainy River Voyageurs took advantage of an inexperienced University of Wisconsin-Stout squad over the weekend with two lopsided victories.
RRCC (5-1) won 21-1 on Saturday and 14-0 on Sunday against a Blue Devils’ team without a starting goalie. The home team had volunteers try out, and the results were poor as two netminders combined to stop only 46 of 81 shots (.568).


10-year reunion held

The Rainy River Community College Cohort Group met for its 10th anniversary June 17 at Sha~Sha Resort.
The group of students was the first graduating class that was formed in conjunction with the Arrowhead University, Bemidji State University and RRCC. It’s class coordinator was David Larkin from BSU. Students attended RRCC several evenings and weekends throughout a three-year period.


MnSCU board approves tuition increases

RRCC tuition and fees to increase 3.1 percent

ST. PAUL (AP) — The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees has approved the lowest tuition increases in a decade.
The MnSCU board voted Wednesday on proposed average tuition increases of 2 percent at state colleges and 3 percent at state universities next year.
It means students at the 25 state colleges will pay an average tuition of $4,080, or $79 more than last year. University students will pay an average of $5,561, or $162 more.

Ninety-four people graduated from Rainy River Community College Friday, with commencement shared with families and friends, and including speakers and music.
There were 21 graduates receiving advanced degrees and one student with multiple degrees. The average age of the graduates was 25 and nearly a quarter of the class, 23, were students of color. Fifteen of the graduates earned an associates degree while still in high school.


94 to graduate from RRCC

Rainy River Community College will celebrate its 41st annual commencement at 2 p.m. May 9 in the college gymnasium.
The ceremony and a reception following the ceremony are open to the public.
Degrees or certificates will be awarded to 94 graduates. Of the 94 graduates, 26 are male and 68 are female. One student will be receiving more than one degree and one team of husband and wife will graduate.

County board supports industrial technology program

The creators of an industrial technology program at Rainy River Community College are considering ways to expand the program.
The program, which is a partnership between the college and Boise Cascade, began in the fall with 22 students.
Boise is now seeking area companies where the students can work in an internship this summer, Tony Jaksa, of Boise’s maintenance department, told the Koochiching County Board Tuesday.
