Interesting story. Thank...
Back to page topInteresting story. Thank you for the link.
Let's hear some more!!!!!!!...
Back to page topLet's hear some more!!!!!!! Very good link. I wish they would investigate the RRCC Football program. I "wonder" what they could uncover??
Did someone mention earlier...
Back to page topDid someone mention earlier that the RRCC students were using the food shelf? Just curious...
let it snow, That was me!!...
Back to page toplet it snow,
That was me!! "Rumor" has it, that they depleted their "government" food debit cards (or whatever they are called), and have just about depleted the food shelf!! So, now it must be time to head back south. I'll be looking forward to their return!!!!
Lets stick to the bad...
Back to page topLets stick to the bad conduct or legal activity for this CC football topic. I had a teammate in college who used the food shelf. He was a good student-athlete doing what he could to get by.
That KSTP link was great. I can't believe the college 'pulled strings' for that kid.
I'm sure they aren't the...
Back to page topI'm sure they aren't the first college to pull strings to make a player eligible. Look at what we let some of our celebs and pro athletes get away with. It's all about that almighty dollar.
Maybe it is time for RCC to...
Back to page topMaybe it is time for RCC to use the money they put into the college athletics and expand their course offerings.
Normandale Community College in Bloomington did this in the early 90's. More courses were offered with the money that was re-routed from the athletics department. It was the best thing they did and their student enrollment expanded with their expanded course offerings.
I would like to keep working on my bachelors degree, but will have to do it online at a different campus, as they don't offer the courses needed. These are the 2xxx level courses (sophmore level) accounting and business classes - they don't offer them.
Just another idea and opinion - have a good day :)
Excellent idea. Take the...
Back to page topExcellent idea. Take the taxpayer money spent on the football team, and the FREE scholarships given to these players (for usually ONE semester) and give it to local people to get a REAL education. And like you say, expand the programs offered. What have all the thousands of dollars poured into the RRCC Football program done for the Falls area?? If you ran a business like that, they would fire you!!
While we're dumpin' our tax...
Back to page topWhile we're dumpin' our tax money into useless entertainment that doesn't benefit the local economy any, we should parade down main street twice per week burning $20 bills. I would have used $100 bills as examples, but let's be realistic about this folks, nobody in the Falls has seen a benjamin in at least a decade.
It would be interesting to...
Back to page topIt would be interesting to know how much money is spent per year on the RRCC athletics as a whole. I think that part of the reason athletics are offered is to lure young people up here to attend our community college. It would be just as interesting to know how much is spent on the Golden Gophers and Bulldogs and the BSU Beavers and all the rest. After all, it is all the same taxpayer's money.
norpole, I think it is a...
Back to page topnorpole,
I think it is a stretch for you to compare RRCC athletics to Golden Gophers athletics! Most people who are "lured" to the Gophers (football for example) go there, wanting and expecting to do "four" years at the school, and get an education. But at RRCC, the incoming players (football) I would bet, have very little interest in doing the "FULL" two years at the school. Any statistics to prove me wrong?? But the taxpayers, etc., shell out thousands of dollars, to have these players for maybe "one" semester! If you lured young guys to play "hockey", how many do you think would play for the FULL two years?? I find it very hard to believe, that you cannot get enough young guys to want to come for two years to play hockey, and "maybe" even get good grades, AND an education in the process!!
Maybe the college should let...
Back to page topMaybe the college should let the public know if we have a problem here. grades that is. I have had issues related to the football program at rrcc for 1.5 years. i also know that most of the information on these blogs is true. i guess silence is golden however the truth should be made known and acted on by the powers to be. come on rrcc let's have it...NO....well thx anyways!

Pls read servo's comments again! He's as LOONEY as ever!!!! He put you all down, and you didn't even know it! Now that's sad!!
I'm worse than before. But...
Back to page topI'm worse than before. But this place hasn't changed at all. This time aroud, instead of threating me, they've just gone ahead and began deleting my posts which they find to be unsuitable. Apparently someone's opinion may just be too graphic or too thought out for some of these mongoloids to grasp as reality, which in turn their fear turns them into power hungry censors, deleting and pruning any trace of someone's biased opinions.
I need more beer.
I am grateful that some of you make a point of scoping out my antics. It's very warming to know that someone may find minimal entertainment in my pessimistic writings.

Back to page topRRCC Does not offer athletic scholarships.
Why is there recruitment...
Back to page topWhy is there recruitment (yes there is) then, to come to the college to play? What is the incentive to the players to relocate to IF?
glue72, So how do they lure...
Back to page topglue72,
So how do they lure these young men, from "way down south" to come up to a foreign land, and play ball? Most of these young men don't come from "well to do" families, so who pays for the moving/travel expenses, tuition/fees, housing, food, etc. . . .?? I put a couple of kids through school and it is very expensive! So how are these "talented" athletes funded?? Someone has to pay for it!! I could understand if some local guys went to the school, and played hockey, etc. The costs could be alot less, and the athletes and/or their families could pay for most of it. But these young southern guys come a long way, to play a semester of football. Any thoughts/comments on this?? Maybe, "HARDEES" provides the funding, since they get most of their business from the players!!
ya you are probably right...
Back to page topya you are probably right again,ROJ. thought i would extend an olive branch in hopes that maybe it would effect his next blog.... we will see. thanks for trying to keep me on the straight and narrow. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!

Back to page topgopher61,
I'm sure servo will set me straight, due to my comments! Glad to hear from ya!! Where ya been?? Give me an email when you get the chance. Happy Holidays to you too, and all of the bloggers on here!! Oh...., are we allowed to do that? You know secularism is spreading, and we have to watch how we celebrate the "Holidays"!!
I think I said that RRCC...
Back to page topI think I said that RRCC offered athletics and I did not say they granted athletic scholarships. The taxpayer money comes from the same place and whether you are a Gopher (like the defensive back that was charged with rape this year) or a BSU Beaver or any other state school. If anyone has a big problem with RRCC athletics, perhaps having a civilized discussion with the RRCC provost or athletic director would be beneficial.
I like the word civilized...
Back to page topI like the word civilized that norpole uses because most discussions of college sports in American, particularly when they relate to football and basketball, the sports with great minority population, are not civilized. Every incident makes the headlines and white racism loves the stories because they confirm everything we think to be true.
What is always missed in the discussion is the degree to which athletics becomes an instrument of social transformation in America. Two of my best church buddies, old guys like me, are very well-to-do and fairly well-placed former jocks, both black, who went to college, like me, to play football. They were likely the first from their families to go away to school and they were rough around the edges. Kind of like Alan Page, the Minnesota Supreme Court judge. Kind of like a lot of the hockey players out of FHS who went to colleges like West Point or Harvard or Colorado College to play hockey and along the way became major contributors to society.
Sports develops young people, especially poor young people. When Russell Johnson left the farm to go to play basketball and run track at Bemidji State or when Bronko Nagurski left the Falls [actually Bemidji HS} to go to the University of Minnesota, they put themselves and their eventual families onto a pathway to improve the family fortunes forever.
So I am a sports liberal. i believe that it works a thousand times better than welfare or any other government program because it has the potential to take some really high risk young people and transform them and their families forever. And along the way some of them run amuck. But some of them don't. And those that won't will not likely spend large chunks of their lives incarcerated. Unless, of course, they are named O.J.Simpson. But that's an entirely different issue.
I knew I could get you out...
Back to page topI knew I could get you out of the "stammlager"!! I'm with you professor. I hate that "white" racism!! Much prefer the "black" racism!! It's much easier to get away with calling people and "each other" racial slurs!! Isn't it funny that I didn't even mention that the RRCC players were "African decent" but because it was "ME" who made the comment, you pulled out one or two of your race cards, and wasted them!! I agree with you that college sports can be a good developmental tool for young people. But today, it is c**p!! It has become "big business" and just a stepping stone for most of these young guys to play a few years and them jump right into the "big leagues"! So do you only "hang" with "sports minded" church buddies, to get that "rush"?? Are they the only ones who can make this country great???? I would be willing to bet that the Military has produced MORE "major contributors" to society, than sports!! In 21 years in the Military, I saw young guys who could barely read and write (thanks to our Government school systems), turn out to be some of the great military leaders, and went out into society and "contributed". Not many of them were stringing dogs up by their necks, because they lost the fight! You mentioned that "sports" works better than any welfare or government program. Well, isn't that what RRCC uses to "recruit" "seasonal" players?? They don't have "scholarships" so how do these players get the money for education and living?? WELFARE!!!! I would be willing to bet that most of ALL college football players, are one step from poverty, and living a poor life. How many of them go on to finish their degrees?? As I said, they are just using the football programs as a launching pad, in hopes of reaching the big leaugues! And I would be willing to bet that most of the players are not ACTUALLY attending ALL of the classes, and actually getting the requisite grades! Just a few thoughts from "down south" in Dixie!!!!
So I awoke the beast of...
Back to page topSo I awoke the beast of roj1950. After your sensitive homeless shelter postings of the last week, I thought we were going to have to rename you roj2010 but, like you, I can always press the button that only rings in your cage.
For all of our readers' information, RRCC is a governmental program and a good one. The state loses money on every student, athlete or not, and very many of those who start a program do not finish one but success isn't measured by failures; it's measured by successes. The same holds true for sports and their ability to transform lives. It's the old invisible hand -- everyone probably acts out of their own personal interest but in the end society wins. I can think of no great advantage to be gained by ending football at RRCC just as I can think of no advantage to be gained by closing RRCC down. But if you remove programs that add up to fifty students per semester to a school set in a declining community, you kill it. And if it dies, we are indeed back in 1950 along with Mr. roj and his wisdom of the deep south.

Back to page topTLJ, just a comment on your statement "and very many of those who start a program do not finish one but success isn't measured by failures; it's measured by successes."
One definition I've read goes:
"Success is the result of good decisions.
Good Decisions are the result of experience.
Experience is the result of bad decisions."
Maybe the RRCC experiment is somewhere in this process.
Deserve Victory

Back to page topHindsight is 20/20.
No man, organization, or community is an island.
Synergy is a real phenomenon that sometimes occurs with cooperation. Civilized communication helps.
Success can be defined in many ways that can be related to specific goals. My personal experience is that careful re-evaluation is required on a periodic basis to achieve "success".
TLJ, Arrrrrrrgh!!!! Yes,...
Back to page topTLJ,
Arrrrrrrgh!!!! Yes, you awoke me!! It helps get the blood flowing on these cold mornings- Thanks!! You are right, I can be sensitive on some subjects, and others I'm a "flaming A-hole!! Nuff said! I agree "in general" with your comments, however, if you somehow could get hockey in RRCC, maybe you could get students who have their minds set on staying to get their A/A degree. Yes, you are right, that "any" students is better than "none", but at what cost?? Maybe the problem with RRCC is that it is a "governmental" program, and you know anything the "government" gets ahold of, well, let's not go into that!! But, what I think needs to be considered is, what is the attrition rate of the football players, compared to other students/athletes that attend. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that you will have drop outs for one reason or another. But, you should focus on what programs will keep the most students attending for the long haul. I'm not a school administrator, but I do understand a little of what makes this world go around. But, if you are that "hard up" for students, that you have to run a "so-called" football program, to attract some students to maybe "cook" your books a little bit, then that is wrong. Maybe it's time to re-focus the curiculum at the school, so that other specialty areas/skills can be learned. By the way, what is wrong with going back to the 1950's? What was the population of the Falls then, and how was it doing?? I know, segregation was running wild in the Falls, but that is gone now!! So, how is the "German Fairytale Landscape" these days, or are you back??
Ljubljana Slovenia today....
Back to page topLjubljana Slovenia today. Blood sausage and sauerkraut. I come back for a few days around Christmas and then head back. Thanks for asking.
RJ, nice little piece. To...
Back to page topRJ, nice little piece. To expand, my wife teaches at Normandale which someone kellib?talked about earlier. Yes, they got rid of sports, probably a bad decision because they lost the identity that sports gives. But they are located in the population dense SW suburbs of the Twin Cities. Rainy River is like Northland in TRF, about 75 students away from dissolution. Small market franchises as they say in baseball. This last year RRCC lost the outdoor leadership program to Ely. If you whittle away at it, you eventually lose it because it is a drag on the state budget. I believe this loss would be second only to a loss of the mill. Worse, it would signal the real end of any future for this place most of us love. So if bad decisions lead us to eventual success, then let's hope bad decisions are allowed.
As I noted earlier, if you...
Back to page topAs I noted earlier, if you have a problem with RRCC students or their athletic programs, the best place to find answers would be at RRCC. If you think that some students are getting food shelf help, then you should see the people at the Food Shelf and ask them what the criteria is to keep from starving. As to living in the 1950's, yes, that was a time of great prosperity for our area. But the Insulite shut down, people left town, the school rosters shrunk, and people bypass us for Canada for their tourism dollar. Successive Republican regimes have decimated our beloved small town by crippling the home owner, the tax payer, the union member and the family. When you add it all up, we are lucky not to be more than a gas station stop to Canada. Here's to a better tomorrow and less living in the past. P.S. thanks TLJ for your wisdom.
