Board training to begin

By MYRNA MEADOWS Three noon-hour workshops have been scheduled to help board members of nonprofits understand their roles, with emphasis on financials. On Nov. 8, Myrna Meadows will speak on the legal requirements of directors as well governance, policies and planning and variations in board structure. On Nov. 29 and Dec. 6, Nonprofit Assistance Fund trainer Janet Ogden-Brackett will present Nonprofit Management Financials I and II. She’ll explain the difference between for-profit and non-profit financial statements, budgeting and internal controls. All meetings are from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Thomas Parish Office building. It’s a bring-a-lunch but beverages will be provided. The first meeting has no fee. The other two are being done for the cost of expenses for the trainer to come from the Twin Cities. Each organization will be asked to pay a fee of $75 per session Nov. 29 and Dec. 6. This will allow any number of directors and staff to attend. In this way, all board members from a nonprofit are encouraged to attend. However, really small organizations that can’t afford the fee can attend at no cost. No one will be turned away. It is hoped to continue workshops in the new year, based on interests identified by those in attendance.
