10 YEARS AGO
Born to Amy and Gordon Savela today was a son, Stewart James, weighing 8 pounds, 8 ounces and measuring 22 1/2 inches.
Falls native and former Bronco athlete Derek Bilben was named the Most Valuable Player of the Indiana State Classic college baseball tournament Sept. 21.

25 YEARS AGO
Ted William Olds, a University of Minnesota medical student, has been assigned to work with Drs. Marc Gorden and Doug Johnson in International Falls through the University’s Rural Physician Associates Program.
In 1980, those over 60 years of age made up 17 percent of the county’s total population, according to a profile prepared by the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission and the Arrowhead Planning Program on Aging. By the year 2010, 21 percent of county residents will be over 60 years of age and the number of persons over 85 will have more than doubled.

40 YEARS AGO
A farewell party was held Saturday in honor of Mrs. James (Billie White) Phelan in the Spot Supper Club. Mrs. Phelan has retired after 31 years with the J.C. Penney Company. Ernie Rousseau sang “Hello, Billie” as a welcome to the guest of honor.
A son was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Edward Skaro.
Will Sipi, who has managed the Mobil Stadium Service Station the past year and a half, has been named bulk oil dealer by Mobil Oil Company.
Lindy Lundeen, 18, a product of International Falls’ junior bowling program, has been accepted into the Professional Bowling Association (PBA).

50 YEARS AGO
A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Norman Naucler, Shari Rae, 6 pounds, 6 1/2 ounces.
A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Day, 808 Sixth St., Dixie Erin, 8 pounds, 7 ounces.
Miss Shirley Belanger will be complimented at a shower Wednesday at the Ranier Community Hall.
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Meyers, 806 Seventh St., returned last evening from Minneapolis where they visited the bedside of their son, Bert Jr., who is confined to the University Hospital.

60 YEARS AGO
Mr. and Mrs. Pat Olson, 304 Sixth St., returned home from a western trip which took them through 13 states and Mexico. During the three-week tour they traveled 6,200 miles.
Mr. and Mrs. H.E. Vogelpohl, 712 Eighth Ave., announce the birth of a daughter today in St. Mary’s Hospital, Duluth.
Mrs. Robert Fulmer (Mary Eleanor Rydberg) is enroute today to Washington to prepare for her appointment as chemical engineer in the federal health service.
Miss Catherine Dorr, who has been on The Journal news staff the past year, has accepted a position with the Hartford Insurance Company in its St. Paul office.
