Candidate forum scheduled for Oct. 14

The International Falls Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a public candidate forum at 6 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Rainy River Community College.
All area residents are welcome. Candidates seeking the following offices will be represented at the forum: Minnesota House District 3A, Koochiching County commissioner candidates, International Falls City Council candidates.
The event will also be broadcast live on radio station KSDM (104.1 FM). The event will be hosted by well-known radio news anchor and reporter, Jerry Franzen of KGHS/KSDM.


‘Loon Country’ Quilt Show planned in Grand Rapids

Indus Community Education is providing bus transportation to the annual “Loon Country” Quilt Show Oct. 17. The quilt show is staged in the Mullins Gymnasium at Itasca Community College, Grand Rapids.
The bus will leave Indus School at 8 a.m., traveling east and picking up passengers on the way.
The show will feature 200 quilts, a silent auction, demonstrations, vendors, special exhibits, quilt appraisals, and a quilt raffle.
The day will also include a stop at a quilt shop in Grand Rapids.
There is a small fee for admission and also for the bus.


Exhibit honors victims of domestic violence, By TOM LAVENTURE, Staff Writer

More than 600 T-shirts to be displayed at the Backus Community Center this month will symbolize the number of people murdered as a result of domestic violence in Minnesota in the last 20 years.
“It brings to life the things that people thought they should not be discussing,” said LeeAnn Meer about The Clothesline Project, a traveling memorial exhibit to honor victims of domestic violence in Minnesota.
The memorial will make International Falls one of four stops this year, and will be on display from October 10-14.


BHS begins adoption program, By LISA KACZKE, Staff Writer

The Borderland Humane Society has begun a new adoption assistance program in light of the lack of foster homes and a shelter in Koochiching County.


Blankets for foster children

Friends For Fleece need donations of micro fleece and fleece fabric to make more of the blankets which go to foster children. All colors and designs are usable.
Previously crafted blankets have gone to children in Koochiching County, Nett Lake and homeless shelters in the Twin Cities. Those who have questions or would like to donate fleece should call Karrene Heppner at 218-324-1430 or e-mail at kmheppner@northwinds.net.


Northland Art Society gathers for meeting

Northland Art Society met for the fall season Sept. 4. The meeting was called to order by chairperson Barb Gray. Minutes from the May meeting were read by secretary Rosie Rasmussen. The treasurers report was presented by Kitty Ewald. All were in favor.
Old business:
After a busy summer with the “Prairie Art Theater” and art classes, Joyce Rasmussen reported it was a very successful event with 65 students attending.
Adele McDonald reported that the “Lady Slipper Festival” was uneventful due to the weather.


Dementia/Alzheimer’s support group meets

Our local dementia/Alzheimer’s group met Sept. 4 at the Holiday Inn. The group was small. In spite of that, it s still good to be able to have the support others that care and understand the frustrations all of us have had to go through, and are still trying to go on with their lives.


Great Decisions to begin 2008-09 season

Great Decisions will begin its 2008-09 season of citizen education and discussion programs about foreign policy issues from 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. Monday at Falls Public Library in the meeting room on the lower level.
Falls High School student leader Anna Remus will facilitate the presentation and discussion on China.
Presenter Sue Nordquist will share her experiences in China as a guest of China’s Office of Chinese Language Council International.


Christian motorcyclists may return to Falls, By TOM LAVENTURE, Staff Writer

Borderland may hear the roar of holy hogs again soon.
Even with the International Falls Bass Championship going on, it was hard not to notice the No Borders Rally of the Christian Motorcyclists Association last month in International Falls. Around 87 of the earliest arrivals led the way in the championship’s kick-off event, the boat parade.


Falls Lions Club gathers for meeting at Holiday Inn

The International Falls Lions Club met Sept. 15 at the Holiday Inn.
President, Dick Schaak called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance.
Capt. Tim Farquharson said the table prayer followed by Beth Reed reading the minutes and the treasurers report by Betty Villalta.
Ice melt was out most successful fund raiser for the year netting over $3,000. Mints and gum balls continue to be doing well also, along with our lunch wagon.
