Shoe drive succeeding

Holy Trinity Episcopal Church of International Falls has so far collected around 600 pairs of shoes for charity.
Lee Grim, an ordained deacon at Holy Trinity, said local residents from the Falls, Littlefork and all around the area have joined the Episcopal Diocese in the largest statewide shoe collection program of its kind in Minnesota history.
“That is the wonderful thing about it,” said Grim. “The community is so giving.”


Warroad pastor endorses McCain, testing IRS rules

WARROAD, Minn. (AP) — A reverend in Warroad is testing the prohibition against preaching politics from the pulpit.
The Reverend Gus Booth told the Warroad Community Church on Sunday that not only should they vote for Republican John McCain, they should also campaign for him.
Booth was participating in an event called ‘‘Pulpit Freedom Sunday’’ that was organized by the Alliance Defense Fund, a group of conservative legal advocates.
Booth says McCain’s positions line up more closely with Biblical teachings on homosexuality and abortion than do those of Democrat Barack Obama.


Zion Women plan circle meetings

The Women of Zion Lutheran Church have scheduled the following October Circle meetings:
Martha Circle will meet at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday with Jennie Skrien as hostess. Bible Study will be by the group.
Altar Circle will gather for a 5 p.m. supper Thursday at Barney’s Family Restaurant. Bible Study will follow at 6:30 at the church.
Tabitha Circle meets at 5 p.m. Oct. 6 with Dee Paulson and Darlyss Samuelson as hostesses. Bible Study will be by Helen Smerika.
Sarah Circle gathers at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 7 with Arlene Selsaas as hostess and Bible Study by the group.

Shoe drive planned to help hurricane victims

Holy Trinity Episcopal Church of International Falls has joined the 106 other churches of the Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota in conducting the largest statewide shoe collection program of its kind in Minnesota history.
The program started on Sept. 7, and extends through Oct. 24, and will be held in conjunction with Soles4Souls, a Nashville-based international charity that will distribute the shoes to the desperate and needy victims of the current hurricane season.


MDG dinner set

Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 820 Fourth St., is conducting its second annual Millennium Development Goals Dinner to raise money that will empower South African women of poverty. Proceeds from the event will be sent to Episcopal Relief and Development, an affiliate of the Episcopal Church of America.
Eight MDG goals to reduce world poverty and hunger have been developed by the United Nations and implemented by over 100 countries and relief agencies of the world.
