Ray Maki, 62, missed less than a week of work during his 35-year career with Boise Cascade. The millwright recently retired from his leadman position at the Sidings Plant.

Howard and Janet Schake were honored at an informal open house recently at the home of Vern and Clara Blake in honor of their 25th wedding anniversary.

Thomas N. Laurion has been selected a counselor for Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., for the 1983-84 school year.

Bronco senior co-captain Laura Kuldanek is among the volleyball statistical leaders in the north. Kuldanek is fourth in kills per game with 3.2 per contestant.
Bronco linebacker Steve Jakala is the 10th leading gridder among all northern Minnesota players in sacks, according to statistics provided to the Duluth News Tribune. Thus far this season, Jakala has three sacks and is tied with five other players with that number. Also defensively, Broncos’ Jakala and Zach Conat are among the leaders in tackles in the north.

Falls native and former Bronco athlete Derek Bilben was named the Most Valuable Player of the Indiana State Classic college baseball tournament Sept. 21.

Ted William Olds, a University of Minnesota medical student, has been assigned to work with Drs. Marc Gorden and Doug Johnson in International Falls through the University’s Rural Physician Associates Program.

At the end of October, Jennie Christopherson will bring her guitar and songs to India where she will join missionaries on a six-week crusade.
Lori Walz, a 1974 graduate of Falls High School and 1976 graduate of Rainy River Community College, was recently appointed interim director for the Community in Schools (CSI) program in Winona.

Jim Hartje, 33, was recently promoted to the position of supervisor in Boise Cascade’s Paper Division finishing-shipping area.

Falls native Mike “Lefty” Curran will be inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame Oct. 22. Curran “has been regarded as one of the greatest American goalies of all time.”
Michael Shermoen has recently achieved certification through an agent assessment conducted by Rural Cellular Corp. Certification is one of the highest achievements in learning excellence and quality control in the wireless industry.

Wayne Foss has been chosen Employee of the Quarter at the Occupational Development Center (ODC). Foss has been employed by the ODC since August 1996 as a custodian at Koochiching County’s Forestland Annex.
